David breaks World CrossFit record

In the gruelling world of CrossFit, 5 times Commonwealth Games gold medallist and World Masters record holder David Morgan is a world record breaker. Competing in a sport where the average age is 28, David managed to shave 27 seconds off the record in a seemingly effortless but punishing circuit of weights and gymnastics. He added yet another world breaking record to his list of achievements.
Originally developed in California in 1995 as an all round training and fitness programme for the police, CrossFit’s popularity is, according to Canada’s Business News Network, "one of the fastest growing fitness movements on the planet".
The idea is to have a high level of fitness across the board, hence the name "CROSSFIT", it combines weightlifting, gymnastic moves and general weight training into circuits that are usually done with specified weights in a specific time.

Here is a great video of Tamara Holmes doing a somewhat-lighter Queen Kong. She competed in the Crossfit games 2009 and is fabulous!

Vanessa,
Thanks for the feedback. In terms of ROM the deadlifts were locked out. I never lean back because it gives me back pain and I see no point in holding the weight on the joints. The hand stand press ups were full range for me, thats my lockout (I think its an age thing)I got the muscle up technique from a crossfit site (I thought it was a legit technique)regarding cleans I agree I did not stand fully. I was protecting a hip injury. God I am beging to sound my age!!Truth is I just did it for fun and to inspire. I have looked at all of the other king kongs and think that they all have ROM problems. Have a closer look and let me know what you think. Everret does not lock out on all HSPU and does not go to straight arms on the muscle ups, also he power cleans his last rep and front squats it. I look forward to seeing someone do the full ROM with 500dl and 275 cl. Its certainly created some interest but I worry that because of the ROM issues that maybe its just for younger people. Crossfit should remember that we are all different and that as we age we lose some flexibility. I didn’t see anyone in their mid 40s in the top 50 crossfit rankings. Thanks for sending the queeen kong, I found it inspiring.
Regards
Dave Morgan
David,
yes it is true everett and orlando had ROM issues as well. You sure stirred up quit a comment uproar on the crossfit site, did you know they posted a link to the youtube video? I think all a generally impressed with your effort, i know i am. In short i think the workout favored your strengths and crossfitters worldwide would welcome more videos of you performing our benchmark workouts, it would be nothing but fun. Great video and your in great shape for 40.
Thanks,
I think I did it because it seemed to tie in with my idea of fitness. I also have a bit of a problem with the fittest guy on the planet thing and thought that if I did king kong with heavier weights and faster that they may re think that statement. I am not for one minute saying that I am the fittest on the planet. I think it is impossible to determine that. I noted the best lifts of the guy who won the CF games last year and realised that I could do between 10 and 20 reps with his best singles and there are younger people out there much better than me. Therefore I think CF world champion would be the correct title for the winner. Bolt can certainly run 100m faster than anyone ever so he can be called the fastest man on the planet ever, however I do not think that he could do king Kong or win the CF games. In terms of other WODs I will do some later in the year. I only do high reps in training now so many of them also suit me. I have benched bodyweight for 60 reps full squatted 180k for 20, deadlifted 200k for 25 and 230k for 15. I have also benched 130k for 25 reps and rowed 2000m in 6.35 so my training is similar to the crossfit idea and it should not take too long to learn some of the techniques. Which do you think are the most challenging bench mark CF wods?

David
Would like to see you attempt Fran.
Robert,
Which one is Fran? Is it thrusters and kipping pull ups?
Dave
Yes, David that is the workout. I would also be curious to see how many rounds of Angie and Cindy you could knock out, which are both bodyweight intensive. I’m in the Army and have been looking for something to help me out with the APFT and have been doing Crossfit for the last two months. I gotta say though Dave, your King Kong workout made me think twice about their methods! Good lord man!
Hey Dave,
Everyone I know has seen your King Kong and all soiled their pants when they did. Post more workouts they’ll motivate all who see them.

FRAN
Three rounds, 21-15- and 9 reps, of:
# 95 pound Thruster
# Pull-ups
I never said it was a world record. None of the king kongs are because
1. No drug testing
2. No one uses full rom in all movements
I did it for fun and without any specialised trainining. If i was serious I would have worked on it for 6 months and used heavy weights. 300 on cleans and 600 on deadlift. I would have also got proper crossfit judges and taken a drug test. In that case it would truly have been a world record.
I do actually hold five world records and they were all done in competition with judges and drug testing.
Check the other king kongs and you will see that none have full rom. I am 46 this year and did it to inspire older athletes. I did that ages ago and what is interesting is that none of the crossfit guys have tried it with those weights which surprised me. I thought they liked pushing heavier weights and faster times.
Still waiting for someone to show me how I should have done it.
Dave
David you are a hero, all my friends are in amazement at this. We have attempted this twice ourselves, in our gym, we have not even come close as you once. I think we need to get our training plan in place for 6 months.
Question – how much training did you do before attempting this? We are planning to do 3 months solid and then have a real go at it.
I just did a few weeks on learing the muscle ups. All of the other moves I could already do. I was thinking of training for six months and doing it with 300 on the cleans and 600 on the deadlifts but after the response from some people decided not to.
Glad that it has inspired you and would be interested to know what your starting point is now and how you get on in six months.

Good luck
Dave
I know the crossfit folks can tend to get a little culty, but I think that’s excusable by their sheer enthusiasm for it. Otherwise, their workouts are freaking hard. I really wonder how many critics have actually tried crossfit-style workouts for a few weeks before sounding off about it. Sure, if you’re training for competitive powerlifting, it’s probably not your best choice. But then, I think the crossfit people would readily admit that.
Beautiful terminology! Inspiring on behalf of each one…
